In June of 1997, we received the worst news of our lives. Shane, our 4 year old red Dobe had osteosarcoma in his right front leg. We weighed the options with our vet and decided that his quality of life was most important. A little over 6 weeks later, we did the hardest thing we've ever had to do. We said goodbye to our first baby. Six months later we contacted Doberman Rescue and met the most beautiful creature ever, named Ninja. He had a coat of shiny black fur, bright white teeth and ears that looked sculpted. We had to have him. My husband and I quickly put up a fence. His foster family had kids and greyhounds just like us. He would be the perfect fit. We couldn't wait to pick him up. His foster family had renamed him Jack and so it stuck. Jack got along splendidly with Ruby, our 6 year old greyhound, and Abigail, our 2 year old daughter. At first Jack seemed aloof and followed my husband around. I was crushed. My first baby was a lap dog with a killer smile. But Jack's beauty and grace won over my heart and soon he was sleeping under covers at night. Ever the watchful guard dog, Jack enjoys his job of chasing squirrels and keeping the sofa warm. We learned later that Jack's original owner was in the military, went AWOL and left him tied to tree. We believed that in Jack's heart he knew he was living the good life - enter Tango. Before going to last year's reunion, my husband mentioned about eventually getting another dog. Well, I jumped at the chance. There were several puppies at the picnic but they were getting a lot of attention and we weren't sure Jack would welcome a puppy's attention. There was an adorable red Dobe on a leash that caught our attention, named Boonie. We walked Jack over to him and there was no aggression. In fact, they seemed to ignore each other. We had been warned about having 2 males in the same household. We kept going back to him throughout the picnic. He seemed very quiet and sweet. So, in the back of the Blazer went the 2 dogs and they slept the whole way home. Over the next few days we got to know a very different dog. A dog who was filled with energy and a slightly devilish side, but all the while trying to please us. He devours his food like it's his last meal and thinks his place is on your laps. We renamed him Tango because he definitely is filled with mischief. We believe to this day that he was just putting on a good show the day of the picnic so he would get adopted. We learned that Tango had a sister named Cassidy also put up for adoption. We wonder if she is a handful, too. Our days now consist of barking, playing and one very crowded bed but we wouldn't change a thing!
